What I'm Reading These Days

The One From the Other by Philip Kerr
This is one of Kerr's series about a German P.I. named Bernard Gunther. The first three were set in pre-war Berlin; this one finds Gunther in Munich in 1949, with Germany laid waste and under the thumb of the victorious Allies. Kerr's transposition of the familiar P.I. formula to the Germany of the thirties and forties is brilliant.

Webb celebrates the Scots-Irish, who migrated from Scotland to Ulster and then across the sea, where they populated Appalachia and formed the basis of U.S. redneck culture. The Scots-Irish are often overlooked in accounts of American ethnic groups, and this is Webb's attempt to give them their place.
