Cold Black Earth

Disillusioned by professional failures, freshly divorced and desperately tired after service in a war zone, Foreign Service officer Rachel Lindstrom resigns from the State Department and comes home to the western Illinois farm where she grew up, hoping to find peace. At home, however, there is little comfort, only a stressed rural economy and a family in crisis. Her brother, still reeling from his wife’s suicide, struggles to run the farm and handle a hell-raising son. Meanwhile, Rachel’s arrival draws a pair of rival suitors: a handsome ex-jock and a rough-hewn sheriff’s deputy who pined for her in high school. Romance is the last thing on Rachel’s mind, but the attention helps her battered self-esteem. There are more serious things to worry about, however. When a deranged killer escapes from a local prison and the bodies start turning up, the far-flung farmsteads go on high alert. And in a county where the miles outnumber the people, it soon becomes clear that the madman is close behind Rachel.
