Running in the Dark
Abby Markstein is a young Manhattanite, a gifted mathematician looking
forward to an academic career at a prestigious eastern school. After her
career plans are derailed by a personal tragedy, she is forced to accept
a position at a small college in Indiana. Resigned to a year or two of
exile in a part of the country she has always looked down on, she
resolves to make the best of it. The college provides a small community
of cultivated people, including a possible suitor, and Abby finds that
little Midwestern towns are more diverse than she imagined.
But before she can settle in, she witnesses a horrific crime while out
for an early-morning jog. The local police seem competent, but nobody
gets arrested. As she tries to get on with her life, Abby will learn
about small-town quirks and secrets and contend with personal and
professional crises, all the while aware that the killer she made eye
contact with is still out there somewhere, looking for the only witness
to his crime.
